“I like to think, and many Hebraic scholars attest, that God the Creator sang the creation into being, that Creation is more about poetic utterances of love rather than about industrial efficiency…”
— Makoto Fujimura Artist & Author

Take a moment and read Genesis 1-2:4.  I’ll wait…

Finished?  Okay, what did you notice?  Did anything surprise you?  What might God be creating around you right now?  How is the Creator of the Universe continuing to speak into our lives and into this world?

I was reminded of the rhythm and repetition of poems as I read these verses.  It is not lost on me that God brings beauty and goodness through beauty and goodness!  Once, I heard a pastor say, “God created us by love, in love, and for love.”  And if we are truly created in God’s image, then perhaps we too are shaped and empowered to be artists and creators?

St. Peter’s Lutheran has been hosting art experiences since September: Paint & Sips, Fall Gnomes, Steampunk Pumpkins, Holiday Cards, Wreaths, Mosaics, and more!  One of the questions that I’ve asked most of these groups is, “how do you feel afterward?”

What is the last thing that you created, made, or repaired?  What does it feel like to shape or restore something?  For me, there is a calm that rests upon me as I create.  Making and mending brings me a deep sense of peace.  I wonder if it is because we are connecting to the very essence of our being?  When we make, we are following and emulating God.

Lent is a time of “re-creation.”  So, I want to invite us to take up an old project or activity.  Could we commit to 40 days of creation?  Writing, playing music, repairing, singing, acting, dancing, arranging flower, making movies, gardening, painting, drawing, assembling models…any, all, and more!!  And I’d love to hear what you noticed during your discipline of creativity!  What do you notice about your health and emotions?  How are your relationships with others and the world?  Do you feel any more connected with God?

Try it! Experiment.  Play.  Create.

It has to be more fun than giving up chocolate, right?           Peace, Pastor Jim
